Why the Most Beautiful Blossoms Have No Scent

Why the Most Beautiful Blossoms Have No Scent

What could be more anachronistic than writing on a laptop computer by candlelight?  I’m outside on my back porch enjoying the post-sunset mid-August Seattle climate.  I don’t yet need an overshirt like I will the rest of the year, and I’m not wearing shorts like I almost never do.  Basically, Im comfortable aside from the lingering sense of how temporary this Eden of lovely climate is for us while summer is here.  But why let that distract us from the ways we manifest our love for our Northwest?

Nancy and Chloe are going backpacking on Mt. Rainier this weekend and there’s a 40 percent chance of showers.  Showers are good, right?  They may have yet another trip where there are obscured vistas of the mountain.  They will be on the mountain, but may not have the visual context that makes the full experience of mountaineering.  They’ll have all the rest though, sore feet, wet clothes, misty pictures.   We cant plan our adventures around weather predictions, right?

We had a productive week of work and Im not sore like I was last week.  This has a lot to do with having added a third crew member this week; Jack Boyd.  Thanks for your hard work, Jack.  We’ve done some nice work this week, Aidan got the nickname “rock man” from our customer who was impressed at his flagstone-fitting skills.  We’ll see if the nickname sticks.

A new lawn chair on uneven ground

Work pants, work shoes in a heap outside

A shower to rinse the grime goes as planned.

Neighbors gather for a picnic on the parking strip

Of a street blockaded by a handwritten sign.

Smiles and chides comprise most greetings

Party food, party sounds, partly sunset

The generations sequester into groups

Adults conspire, teens prattle, kids scatter

We’re neighbors.  We belong here for now.

We’ve torn out many vestiges of what surely were master plans

Projects loved, confided-in, codified

A passion flower vine makes the best of a railing

It’s flower’s stamen’s spike in radius

It’s scentless, but beautiful nonetheless.

Great to hear from you, Peg!

As it happens, Nancy, Porter and Chloe will be in Owosso next week- I think the 18th of August. I’ll remind them to look you up. Wouldn’t it be great if they could make it to your church?!

I hope all is well with you guys. The congregation and the town had better know how lucky they are to have you- personally I miss your enthusiasm here.

Thanks for leaving a comment, this blogging stuff is fun. I might just keep it up.

I am meeting up with the trio next weekend in Owosso. Aunt Judy is having us for brunch on Sunday. I hope Nancy and Chloe and Porter can come to my church. It’s a two minute walk from Judy’s house. Judy actually lives on our street! Wish you were coming, too…

I’ll make my way that-a-way one day. Its summer in the northwest! I’m going exploring on my bike that week. Woo-hoo!
