09 Mar Another Stone Staircase
Nancy has a design aesthetic that employs the intersection of a respect for the randomness of nature, and the ordering of form that elementally simple utility demands. For example, she has us build a lot of staircases out of natural stone. Not every project has this as a design element, but many do, at least in some form of a stone bridge, pathway or retaining wall. Here’s another example of the implementation of a utility feature on a recent project. Its a stone staircase. I love building these. This one is made from Bluestone that I cut, but as minimally as I needed to so that every visible surface is a naturally appearing cleave, or snap of the rock.
